For a while now, there have been rumors of a new version of the Triumph Scrambler 400X, off-road ready and with beefed-up armor. Now, we see India’s moto-press running photos of just such a machine under testing, presumably known as the Triumph Scrambler 400XC.

What will be different with the new machine? The spy photos (see here) show a yellow paint job with black accents that look a lot like Yamaha’s classic “Speed Block” livery. Well you know what they say; imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Anyway, that paint might not make it to production.

Who cares about the looks anyway—it’s the hard parts we’re truly concerned about, and rumor is that Triumph will give the bike some more rugged armor (see that skid plate). There’s a higher front fender, handguards and a flyscreen as well.

The cast wheels that are standard on the Triumph Scrambler 400X appear to be replaced by spoked wheels, still 19-inch in front and 17-inch in back. If that’s the case, we’d also suspect the suspension will be more-or-less unchanged as well—but that’s just speculation for now.

What won’t change is the engine, since it gets expensive to mess with emissions profiles and other regulations. Maybe the whole 400 lineup will see an update, but don’t expect a hot-rodded version of this liquid-cooled single in this more offroad-oriented machine. Euro A2 licensing regulations mean they’ll keep to a specific power-to-weight ratio. It will still likely make just under 40 horsepower, and the bike will still weigh around 395 pounds wet.

If you don’t want to wait for the new machine, don’t forget that the crew at UK-based Rally Raid has their own take on this formula—see here.
