One bike I’ve always wanted to review is the Honda XR650L, but, too bad for me—I live in Canuckistan, and Honda hasn’t sold them here for several years. Bummer.

But, good news! Jack Snider, the good guy behind Madjack Media, is here to pick up my slack. Jack bought himself a recent-production Honda XR650L and put a lot of miles on it, through hard terrain, to give you the review above. Here’s his YouTube video description:

I rode this Honda XR650L through some of the roughest terrain possible! In this video I will tell you everything I learned about this bike.

The Honda XR650L is a budget friendly, ultra simple, and ultra reliable machine that was designed for one purpose- to explore. So, with that in mind, I spent two weeks exploring the backcountry on this bike and truly put it through every test that was possible..

His findings: Overall, the XR650L is a very competent machine. With the machine’s chassis in basically stock configuration (a lowering link was installed), Jack bulled this bike up and down a lot of tough terrain, noting that the bike’s suspension is a bit soft—but he also had a lot of luggage aboard, and wasn’t looking to ride it like a hard-core dirt bike. And, he felt it fit the kind of riding he was doing on this trip.

The engine had enough torque to haul the bike uphill on some challenging mountains; Jack did experience some oil burning at one point, a common complaint among XR-L owners, but didn’t have any long-term trouble from that. At another point, being stuck in the mud left him with a burnt-out clutch, and he reports it was easy to change out with basic hand tools.

So. A basic bike that can go just about anywhere and haul a lot of luggage. Interested? If you’re an American, you’re in luck; Honda USA still sells them for $6,999 MSRP.
