BMW of North America is recalling certain 2024 and 2025 M 1000 XR and M 1000 R motorcycles equipped due to a fault with the bike’s steering damper. The problem stems from a valve pin inside the damper that was not produced to BMW’s specifications.
BMW’s Part 573 Safety Recall Report
BMW’s Part 573 Safety Recall Report to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says up to 51 motorcycles are affected.
In the report, BMW says:
“This safety recall involves the steering damper which may not have been produced by the supplier according to specifications. Specifically, the valve pin inside the damper may not have been properly fastened within the housing.”
“As a consequence, the valve pin may wander from its location, which could reduce the flow path capacity within the damper. If this occurs, the movement of the steering damper may become stiff.”
Describing the safety risk, BMW says:
“Increased steering effort by the rider would be needed at low speeds (less than 30 km/h), which could increase the risk of a crash. ”
